Yukon Government Tuned in to the Sound Industry

Whitehorse – The Yukon government’s Film & Sound Commission, a branch of the Department of Economic Development, is pleased to announce the most recent recipients of the Yukon Sound Recording funding. This fund supports Yukon’s sound recording industry by providing support to local artists to assist with the cost of professionally recording their music.

“Yukon is home to a number of skilled recording artists,” Minister of Economic Development Jim Kenyon, said. “The government supports these industry members as they build viable careers in the sound recording industry here in Yukon.”

The Yukon Sound Recording Program is available to subsidize the cost of professional sound recording and professional demo recording. This intake funded a total of $13,888 to four local artists.

Kyle Cashen received $5,000 to help cover the recording costs of his first full length album, which he plans to record this spring. Cashen has been living in Yukon for four years and believes this album truly reflects his time here.

“My intention is to make a full length recording that is as reflective of my life in Yukon as possible,” Cashen explains. “I play with a lot of different musicians and I’d like the album to emulate the sound of musicians getting together and jamming with friends - just playing music.”

Craig Marcuk also received funding through the Sound Recording Program. Marcuk received $2,000 to record a professional demo. Demos are circulated by artists to increase their profile in the music industry.

“This is the first time I’ll professionally record my own art,” Marcuk said. “The recording process helps to consolidate my sound by forcing me to make choices about my music, take it from the realm of imagination and make it concrete. I hope this demo will grow into something bigger than just me playing solo. I want to build something, such as a band, that is more marketable.”

Sound Recording Program grants are awarded twice each year with applications accepted May 1 and Nov. 1. Projects are reviewed by a jury of industry peers. Awards are granted to eligible applicants whose projects best meet objectives of the Yukon Sound Recording Programs.
