Government Renews Its Commitment To Literacy Funding
WHITEHORSE - Thanks to continued support from the Government of Yukon, the Literacy Action Committee has dispersed another round of funds to a number of valuable literacy projects throughout the territory.
Approximately $60,000 will be awarded to 15 groups operating literacy initiatives throughout the Yukon. The Literacy Action Committee met in January to consider 22 proposals totaling $106,000.
"Due to the positive results of projects funded by the Literacy Action Committee last year, this government is making the commitment to renew its support in this area," Education Minister John Edzerza said. "Literacy is a priority for this government because we want Yukoners to have access to the training they need to succeed in the work force and in their communities."
The funding for the Literacy Action Committee is made possible through the government's Yukon Literacy Strategy.
"There is a need for literacy programming here in the Yukon and through direction from the Yukon Literacy Strategy, we are allocating funds to where they will be of greatest benefit to all Yukoners," Edzerza added.
"I am extremely pleased with the response from throughout the Yukon for this round of funding, Literacy Action Committee Chair George Green said. "This again demonstrates the importance given to identifying and meeting literacy needs by our communities. The Literacy Action Committee is delighted to be able to work with our many Yukon partners to help make a positive difference for many Yukon people and families."
