Community Training Funds Support Tourism Training In Carcross, Teslin

WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government is providing Community Training Funds for tourism employment training in Carcross and Teslin this spring.

A food services and facilities operations program, administered by Yukon College in partnership with Teslin Tlingit Council, will help the people of Teslin to take advantage of growing opportunities in tourism in their community.

The program will offer training in occupational and food safety, hospitality and facility operations, and the culinary arts. The in-class learning will be complemented with a five-week practicum where students will be placed in a tourism business environment to get hands-on experience.

Also through support from Community Training Funds, the Yukon College campus in Carcross will be offering a 16-week wilderness guiding program, based on the same program that has been running with great success for several years in Haines Junction.

The focus of wilderness guiding program will be to enhance employment opportunities for students in the wilderness tourism industry; provide students with the necessary entrepreneurial skills to develop and market a small, sustainable wilderness tourism business; and offer students an array of certificate courses and practical skills including wilderness first aid, firearms safety, small engine repair and bear awareness.

"Community Training Funds are a unique and effective way to provide Yukoners with the training they need to succeed in the world of work," Education Minister John Edzerza said. "These tourism employment training initiatives will provide many new opportunities for participating students."

The Yukon government has invested $1.5 million in Community Training Funds this year. There are three main types of Community Training Funds: industry or sector-based, community-based and project specific.
