Funding Increased For More Cultural Programs For Students

WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government has provided funding to enhance cultural programming in schools in its 2005/06 budget. The funding will be available to schools in consultation with First Nations and minority groups in the Yukon.

"Learning about culture is an important part of every student's education," Education Minister John Edzerza said. "This new funding to enhance cultural programming provided by this government will help increase student awareness about First Nation culture as well as the culture of minority groups in the Yukon."

"The bison feast tonight at Elijah Smith Elementary School is an excellent example of how our schools undertake cultural activities that enrich the lives of students" Edzerza said. "Through the new funding for cultural enhancement in schools, this government will further support cultural activities in schools because we value a culturally relevant education system."

The primary focus of the cultural programming in schools will be on First Nation cultural activities.

"I encourage all schools to take advantage of this funding," Edzerza added. "Cultural awareness is important to a person's development and it helps to set the groundwork for lifelong learning."

The Yukon government will be contributing a total of $305,000 to enhance cultural programming in schools this fiscal year.
