Yukon Government Announces New Literacy Award
WHITEHORSE - As a member of the Council of the Federation, the Yukon government is pleased to announce the first annual Council of the Federation Literacy Award.
The Council of the Federation was created by Canadian premiers in 2003 to help the provinces and territories play a leadership role in revitalizing the Canadian federation and build a more constructive and cooperative federal system.
"Literacy is important for healthy communities and a vibrant economy. We want to recognize Yukoners who are literacy leaders in their community," Premier Dennis Fentie said.
A literacy leader is any person or organization that helps and inspires someone to work towards or achieve their literacy goals. Literacy leaders are everywhere in Yukon—they could be an individual literacy worker, a nonprofit group or a business with an innovative approach, or perhaps a learner who has gone on to help others.
"Literacy is an important component of lifelong learning," Education Minister John Edzerza said. "There are many people and organizations involved in literacy throughout the Yukon and the Council of the Federation Literacy Award was created to recognize their hard work and achievements."
The recipient of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award in Yukon will be presented with a medal at a special awards ceremony in Whitehorse.
