St. Elias Students To Embark On Community Band Tour

HAINES JUNCTION - Nineteen Grade 8 to 12 students from St. Elias Community School in Haines Junction will be hitting the road for their annual communities band tour. Between June 1 and 3, three students will perform in Whitehorse, Carmacks, Faro, Ross River, Mayo and Pelly Crossing.

The annual band trip has been a tradition at St. Elias Community School for about 15 years.  During that time, school groups have visited every Yukon community except Mayo, which is on this year's tour, and Old Crow.

"The St. Elias band program is a little different from other high school programs," Richard Godson, band director at St. Elias Community School said. "Rather than performing in a traditional large concert band format, students form into smaller groups of six or eight students to perform pop and rock music featuring guitars, keyboards, drums, bass, saxophone and vocals."

In addition to the annual communities band tour, St. Elias students also find opportunities to perform each year at various school and community events including the Christmas Concert and the Alsek Music Festival.

"I commend the band students at St. Elias Community School for their dedication to attend practice and pursue lifelong learning through music," Education Minister John Edzerza said. "Certainly the feedback from the communities shows their hard work pays off, their performances are always well received and enjoyed by all."
