Premier Presents Literacy Award To Yukon Literacy Leader

WHITEHORSE - Premier Dennis Fentie presented the Council of the Federation Literacy Award today to long-time Yukon literacy advocate George Green. The Council of the Federation Literacy Award is a national award presented to a literacy leader in each province and territory.

"A literacy leader is any person or organization that helps and inspires someone to work towards or to achieve their literacy goals," Fentie said. "I congratulate George Green for receiving this prestigious award and I would like to thank him for his contribution towards literacy in Yukon."

"Literacy is a priority for this government because it is very important to maintaining and developing healthy communities and a vibrant economy," Education Minister John Edzerza said. "There are many ways that George Green has contributed to literacy in Yukon – as Executive Director of Learning Disabilities Association of the Yukon and as Chair of the Literacy Action Committee to name a few."

The Council of the Federation was created by Canadian premiers in 2003 to help the provinces and territories play a leadership role in revitalizing the Canadian federation and build a more constructive and co-operative federal system.
