Department Of Education Launches Early Reader Books Focused On First Nation Culture

WHITEHORSE - The Department of Education and Eagle Crest Books have launched a series of seven books for early readers that focus on Yukon First Nations culture. The books were written and produced by Lorraine Adams and Lynn Bruvold in collaboration with the Department of Education and will be available in all Yukon schools.

"We will continue to work in partnership with First Nations to develop curriculum resources and materials that focus on aboriginal culture. The Yukon government is committed to a public school system that meets the needs and aspirations of all Yukon students," Education Minister John Edzerza said.

The Department of Education is also working on Yukon First Nation focused materials and resources for a Grade 5 land claims unit and a Yukon First Nation History 12 textbook. In addition to new curriculum materials, the Yukon government will contribute a total of $305,000 to enhance cultural programming in schools this year.

"Many people have been involved in creating these books - Elders, students, First Nations, school principals, curriculum staff at the Department of Education and the people at Eagle Crest Books," Edzerza said.

"Reading is one of the single most important gifts we can give our children. I imagine these books will be enjoyed by many readers and will play a significant role in making Yukon classrooms more culturally relevant to First Nation students."

Copies of the Eagle Crest early reader books titled "My Grandpa," "Hot Moose Stew," "The Dog Sled Ride," "Big Things and Little Things," "Going Outside," "Hungry Red Fox," and "New Slippers" are available through the Department of Education.
