Minister Of Education Announces Award-Winning Student Artists

WHITEHORSE - Minister of Education, Patrick Rouble, has announced the 10 finalists in the Young People's Art Awards.

"This is quite an achievement for our young artists, not only because the calibre of the artwork featured is very high, but also because the award-winning art work will be professionally framed and displayed in government venues throughout Whitehorse for everyone to admire," Rouble said. "Student artwork that is inducted into the permanent collection becomes an enduring record of the Yukon's culture and history."

Work by the award-winning artists will be inducted into the government's permanent student art collection and will be on display at the Department of Education for the next month.

"I'd like to thank the art teachers in our public school system and the parents who guide our students to create art with both passion and skill," Rouble said.

The Young People's Art Awards is made possible thanks to assistance from the Department of Tourism and Culture and the Department of Education. Students win a cash prize for their artwork.

"Engaging young people in artistic activity is critical to their development as creative thinkers," Minister of Tourism and Culture, Elaine Taylor, said. "In addition to the obvious benefits of enhancing creativity and expression, studies indicate that participation in the arts also helps young people to develop self-confidence and achieve higher academic performance."
