Immigration Consultants (Business Immigration)

The following is meant solely to help the reader understand the main features of primary regulations governing this activity, and not meant in any way to provide a legal interpretation.

Immigration and Refugee Protection Act:

Applicants for Canadian Immigration or Canadian Citizenship are not required to pay a consultant or representative to assist them in their application, and applicants who have representatives or consultants do not receive preferential treatment.

Beginning in April 2004, the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants (CSIC) will serve as a self-regulatory body for Canadian Immigration Consultants.

As of April 2004, the only Immigration and Citizen Consultants who will be recognized by the Federal Government department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, will be those who are members in good standing of CSIC or lawyers who are members of a Canadian Provincial or Territorial law society.

Immigration Consultants are not required to register with the Society if their practices are restricted to matters of citizenship law only.

Membership in the CSIC will be restricted to Canadian Citizens and permanent residents.

Certified Immigration Consultants must abide by a Code of Conduct and carry mandatory errors and omissions insurance. They are also subject to a formal complaint process. The title is available only to candidates who have successfully completed an approved formal academic program and passed a rigorous application process.
