B.C. JOINS INTERNATIONAL EFFORT TO TACKLE GLOBAL WARMING
Premier Gordon Campbell joined leaders from across Europe and North America Monday to sign the International Carbon Action Partnership in Lisbon, Portugal.

LISBON, PORTUGAL - British Columbia is partnering with European Union countries and U.S. states in a groundbreaking international effort to fight climate change, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.

CAMPBELL, DOER SIGN AGREEMENT ON CLIMATE ACTION
Premier Gordon Campbell and Manitoba Premier Gary Doer signed a memorandum of understanding, joining forces to deal with climate change, improve conditions for Aboriginal citizens, and further international relations and trade. The agreement affirms the commitment of both provinces to reduce greenhouse gas emissions below 1990 levels and beyond, and sets out specific actions that will help meet those targets.

B.C., OREGON EXTEND PARTNERSHIP ON CLIMATE ACTION
Premier Gordon Campbell and Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski sign a memorandum of understanding that commits B.C. and Oregon to work together to cap and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and collaborate on the innovation and implementation of clean technologies. Since May, the Province has signed similar agreements with California and Washington, with the goal of forging a new Pacific Coast Collaborative that establishes a framework for leadership and co-operative action on additional areas of mutual interest and benefit for the Pacific Coast region.

VANCOUVER - British Columbia and Oregon extended their formal partnership on climate action and Pacific Ocean conservation today with an agreement that will result in new opportunities for collaboration between the two jurisdictions, Premier Gordon Campbell and Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski announced.

PREMIER ANNOUNCES PLANNED EXTENSION OF FILM TAX CREDITS
At an event Oct. 19, 2007, at North Shore Studios in North Vancouver, Premier Gordon Campbell underscored the industry's professionalism, its contributions to the B.C. economy and its role in raising B.C.'s profile worldwide. He also announced plans to introduce legislation next year to extend B.C.'s film tax credits to 2013.

NORTH VANCOUVER – The Province intends to extend British Columbia’s successful film tax credits for an additional five years to 2013, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today at a celebration to proclaim Motion Picture Industry Week in B.C.

GRADE 2 STUDENTS TO BECOME “ENERGY DETECTIVES”
Premier Gordon Campbell introduced Grade 2 students at Queen Mary's Elementary school to a program that will teach them how to conserve electricity and pass that knowledge on to families and friends. School lesson plans featuring Smarty and the Energy Detectives will be delivered to Grade 2 teachers throughout B.C. at workshops in their school districts.

VANCOUVER – Grade 2 students across British Columbia will be transformed into ‘energy detectives’ thanks to a BC Hydro program that teaches energy conservation, Premier Gordon Campbell said today as he launched a new Power Smart school program.

PREMIER CAMPBELL AND WASHINGTON STATE GOVERNOR ENGAGE IN CONVERSATION ON CLIMATE CHANGE
Premier Gordon Campbell and Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire met Oct. 18, 2007, in Vancouver. The occasion was a 'mini-summit' on opportunities within the region involving technologies, operational practices and business strategies that address climate change. This conference is held in Vancouver every October to focus on an issue of importance to the Puget Sound region.

Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire and Premier Gordon Campbell joined community and business leaders from throughout the Puget Sound to discuss reducing our collective ecological footprint.

LANDMARK TSAWWASSEN TREATY LEGISLATION INTRODUCED
Premier Gordon Campbell welcomed Kim Baird, Chief of the Tsawwassen First Nation, to the Royal B.C. Museum for a celebration Oct. 15, 2007, before the introduction of historic Tsawwassen First Nation settlement legislation in the legislature, an important step on the road to reconciliation with the Tsawwassen people. Under the agreement, the Tsawwassen First Nation will be provided with approximately 724 hectares of treaty settlement land and a cash transfer of $13.9 million over 10 years. Located at Roberts Bank in Delta, the Tsawwassen First Nation entered into treaty negotiations in 1993, initialled a Final Agreement with B.C. and Canada in 2006, and voted to ratify the Final Agreement in July of this year.

VICTORIA – The British Columbia treaty process reached a historic milestone today with the introduction of Tsawwassen First Nation settlement legislation in the legislature.

PREMIER HELPS BCIT'S NEW AEROSPACE TRAINING CAMPUS TAKE OFF
On Oct. 12, Premier Gordon Campbell officially opened BCIT's new $76.5-million aerospace training campus, at the gateway to Vancouver International Airport. Canada's largest aerospace training school includes 40 classrooms, computer labs, a library, and a seminar room with global teleconferencing capabilities that support BCIT's new air traffic management programs. BCIT is also the first post-secondary institution in Canada to offer its students a control tower simulator that re-creates the real-world air traffic control environment. The Richmond campus was designed to protect the surrounding natural habitat and minimize its environmental impact.

BCIT is Canada's first post-secondary institution with control tower simulation technology.

PROVINCE ANNOUNCES STEPPED-UP STRATEGY TO MAKE HOMELESSNESS HISTORY
At Yukon House in Vancouver on Oct. 12, Premier Gordon Campbell announced $41 million in additional measures to help break the cycle of homelessness, including funding to allow shelters to remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

By remaining open around the clock, the shelters will act as venues where their clients can meet with support providers. Other measures include increasing the number of communities with outreach programs from 30 to nearly 40, establishing an Aboriginal outreach program, providing 750 more rent supplement units to assist the homeless in the private market, and funding pre-development costs to ensure city-owned sites will be ready for the start of construction of new supportive housing within a year.

New measures to alleviate homelessness include more outreach, intervention, supportive housing.

RAPID BUS SERVICE ON PORT MANN TO BENEFIT 21,600 DAILY
Premier Gordon Campbell was joined by Minister of Transportation Kevin Falcon Oct. 5, 2007 for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with TransLink to provide $180 million for a new eight-lane Port Mann Bridge and reinstated transit service. When in place, the frequent and rapid bus service on the Port Mann will benefit 21,600 Lower Mainland commuters each day, enabling drivers to travel all the way from Langley to Coquitlam or Burnaby in less than 25 minutes. The Province will contribute $150 million, while TransLink will contribute $30 million for buses and facilities.

VANCOUVER – An agreement signed between the Province of British Columbia and TransLink will ensure rapid bus service across the Port Mann Bridge, benefiting 21,600 commuters daily.

B.C. COMMITS $70 MILLION TO ALZHEIMER’S DRUG STUDY
Minister of Health George Abbott (centre) and Rosemary Rawnsley, Executive Director of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. (right) joined Premier Gordon Campbell Oct. 4, 2007 to announce the Alzheimer's Drug Therapy Initiative. This research program will continue for up to three years and involve more than 25,000 British Columbians diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer's. For the first time, PharmaCare will cover the cost of three cholinesterase inhibitors, which appear to be most effective in the early and moderate stages of Alzheimer's disease.

VICTORIA – As the lead funding partner in a new $78-million study of the effectiveness of Alzheimer’s medications, the Province will provide PharmaCare coverage of three cholinesterase inhibitors for the first time, Premier Gordon Campbell announced.

PREMIER PARTICIPATES IN CEREMONIAL BLESSING OF PLUTONIC POWER PROJECT
On Oct. 4, 2007 Premier Gordon Campbell joined Donald McInnes, President of Plutonic Power (left), and Ken Brown, Klahoose First Nation Chief (centre) to take part in a ceremony to bless and launch a key First Nations partnership, the 196-megawatt East Toba and Montrose run-of-river project. Part of the Green Power Corridor development, the project is estimated to cost $660-million. When completed, the Green Power Corridor development will represent over $3 billion of capital investment, generating sufficient electricity to meet the needs of over 500,000 B.C. homes.

Premier joins Sliammon and Klahoose First Nations elders and Sechelt First Nations members to launch 196-megawatt East Toba and Montrose run-of-river project.

PREMIER GORDON CAMPBELL LENDS HIS VOICE TO RAISE-A-READER DAY IN B.C.
With an enthusiastic "Extra, Extra," Premier Gordon Campbell participated in Raise-a-Reader Day, one of the initiatives the Province supports toward its goal of making B.C. the most literate jurisdiction in the world by 2010. This year marks the 11th for Raise-a-Reader and the fourth consecutive year the provincial government has committed to match other donations. Raise-a-Reader supports 180 organizations that help families, especially children, to learn to read. To date, the Province has contributed over $1 million to the Vancouver Sun and Victoria Times-Colonist Raise-a-Reader campaigns.

Premier Gordon Campbell was among the celebrities who took literacy to the streets of Vancouver.

PREMIER WELCOMES B.C.'S NEW LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR TO LEGISLATURE
On Oct. 1, the Honourable Steven L. Point was installed as the 28th Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia. A distinguished lawyer and judge, Point is the first Aboriginal to be appointed as B.C.'s Lieutenant-Governor.  His distinguished career includes service as Chief Commissioner of the B.C. Treaty Commission, instructor of Native Law at the University of Saskatchewan, and Director of the Native Law program at the University of British Columbia.  He succeeds the Honourable Iona Campagnolo, who has served as Lieutenant-Governor since 2001.

PROVINCE AND GE HELP REVITALIZE ROBSON SQUARE
Everyone's a winner as up-and-coming figure skaters receive medals from Premier Gordon Campbell. The young people demonstrated their skating prowess as part of the official re-opening and re-naming of the GE Ice Plaza Oct. 1, 2007. VANCOUVER – A $1.6-million sponsorship agreement between the Province and GE will help reopen the outdoor ice skating rink at Robson Square in time for the 2010 Winter Games, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today with GE chief marketing officer Dan Henson.
