Experience History
One of the most important events in Prince Edward Island's history is the role it played in shaping
the Canada we know today. In 1864, a small group of elected officials gathered in Charlottetown to discuss the idea of
uniting three Maritime jurisdictions. It was during this conference that the idea of a larger union and the creation
of a country was introduced. This historic event and those that followed led to the founding of our country, making
Prince Edward Island the Birthplace of Canada.
