Charlottetown - Mt. Stewart Loop Route Description
Charlottetown - Mt. Stewart Loop
Distance: 68 kilometres ( 42 miles )

This is an easy to moderate all-day ride. It starts in downtown Charlottetown, following Confederation Trail out of the city and through pleasant countryside to the small village of Mt. Stewart. Along the way, anyone with an interest in gardening will want to stop at Veseys Seeds, a famous seed company, to visit their trial gardens and check out their retail store. In Mt. Stewart, the Trailside Inn and Café is a cyclist's Mecca, with good food and some of the best entertainment on the Island. From Mt. Stewart back to Charlottetown, this loop follows quiet paved roads with lovely views of rivers and farms.

If you would like to cycle for two or three days, you can continue beyond Mt. Stewart on Confederation Trail and connect with our St. Peters Route, featuring some of the best beaches on P.E.I.. Then you can follow the remainder of this loop on your way back to downtown Charlottetown.

There are more options for lodging in downtown Charlottetown than we could begin to describe — hotels, motels, inns, and B&Bs; in all price categories — but no campgrounds. However, 26 kilometers along the route, Confederation Trailside Tourist Grounds is a pleasant campground right on Confederation Trail. Confederation Trailside Tourist Grounds also has B&B; accommodation. In Mt. Stewart there are two B&Bs; - Crane's Landing and MacDonald's of Maple Hill, as well as the Trailside Inn and Café. Closer to Charlottetown, the route passes Sunset View B&B; in Mt. Herbert. Specific locations are noted in the route directions that follow. Consult the P.E.I. Visitors Guide for details on these and other accommodations near the route.

There are countless restaurants and cafés in Charlottetown, but choices are slimmer along the route. Around the Bend has a snackbar that is open in peak season. Otherwise the first and nearly the last opportunities for food and drink are in Mt. Stewart — a convenience store, and the Trailside Café. There is one other grocery store on the way back to the Charlottetown area, in Fort Augustus. Distances are not great, and you certainly will not go hungry!

The terrain on this ride is generally easy. From Charlottetown to Mt. Stewart on Confederation Trail there are no hills at all. Most of the way after Mount Stewart, there is enough variation in the terrain to produce gorgeous scenery, but only one or two hills that demand a moderate workout.
