Islanders are involved in many sports. Many Islanders play ice hockey during the fall and winter months (October to March) or ski at Prince Edward Island's ski park at Brookvale. Curling and figure skating are also popular. During the summer months, soccer, baseball, golf and tennis are among the major sports that are played. Street hockey is also a very popular past time. Island kids can participate in a full range of sports using the many sporting facilities located throughout Prince Edward Island.

Schools at the junior and senior high levels also have a number of school sports teams including the following. Not all schools have these teams.

Island kids also compete in the Canada Games that are held every two years and alternate between summer and winter sports. As well, every two years preceding Canada Games, the Provincial Games are held in a range of sports with teams representing each county.

    Are there any professional sports teams on PEI?
  • The PEI Rocket of the QMJHL plays out of Charlottetown and lots of Islanders watch the sports that are popular throughout Canada such as the National Hockey League and Major League Baseball.
    Who are some famous PEI athletes?
  • PEI is home to Lori Kane who is a very popular golfer on the LPGA tour.
  • Dave "Eli" MacEachern won a gold medal in bob sledding in the winter Olympics.
  • Brad Richards was named the Canadian Hockey League Player of the year in 1999-2000 and helped lead his team the Rimouski Oceanic to a Memorial Cup victory. He has recently won the Stanley Cup with his Tampa Bay Lightning team of the National Hockey League.
    What do Island kids do for fun in the winter?
  • Island kids play hockey, figure skate, speed skate, ski, and have lots of fun in the snow! They also participate in a full range of indoor sports, such as basketball, judo, karate and wrestling. Check out the sporting facilities.
    Can kids swim in the salt water?
  • PEI has the good fortune to be completely surrounded by water so it is easy for kids to swim in the warm salt waters. There are numerous supervised and unsupervised beaches throughout the province not to mention the pools.
