‘Be A Responsible Server’ Self-Study Training For Yukoners

WHITEHORSE –  The Yukon Liquor Corporation has developed a self-directed version of the existing 'Be A Responsible Server' (BARS) training program.

The program focuses on explaining server responsibilities, recognizing signs of intoxication and ways to identify and manage difficult or intoxicated patrons. It also provides information on methods to deal with minors, over-serving and overcrowding of licensed premises.

"Having a self-study option, as recommended in the Substance Abuse Action Plan and the Liquor Act & Regulations Review, makes the BARS course much more accessible to the staff of licensed premises throughout the territory," Jim Kenyon, Minister Responsible for the Yukon Liquor Corporation, said. "With this training format, more servers in more communities can benefit from the training program."

Participants advance through the workbook, checking themselves through pre-tests and post-tests for each chapter. When they complete the program, they submit a final test for scoring. All successful participants will receive their BARS certificate of completion in the mail.

"The self-study BARS course is based on the existing in-person BARS course content," Kenyon said. "We worked with industry to make it useful and understandable."

Like the in-person delivery option, this course is free. The self-study program comes in either hard-copy manual or CD-ROM.

Registration forms are available on-line at www.ylc.yk.ca, at Yukon Liquor Corporation's head office in Whitehorse, or at rural community liquor stores. Registrants can pick up the course material in person at the head office or any rural community liquor store, or have it mailed to them.
