Wineries And Distilleries Get Green Light To Operate In Yukon

WHITEHORSE - Minister responsible for the Yukon Liquor Corporation, Jim Kenyon today announced amendments to the Liquor Act and regulations which will allow Yukon businesses to produce wines and spirits, including liqueurs.

"Local liquor manufacturing can stimulate economic development and small-scale tourism related industries," Kenyon said. "Yukon produces great beer. Why not wine or spirits? We hope this change in legislation will promote small businesses and encourage Yukon entrepreneurs."

This latest amendment responds to requests from local entrepreneurs and businesses for legislative changes to allow the manufacture of wine and spirits in Yukon. Manufacturers are subject to the same rules and regulations that are already in place for brewers, including federal laws, and require the proper licences to manufacture and sell their products.

Promoting small business, trade, and investment are government priorities. The legislative amendment is expected to open doors for new business and job opportunities, and a more varied selection of liquor products in Yukon.

The amendment also responds to the needs of consumers who indicated in a Customer Service survey last fall that they would like more product lines added to the Yukon liquor inventory. "Yukon Liquor Corporation looks forward to proudly displaying more local products on liquor store shelves," Kenyon added.

Yukon Liquor Corporation has prepared an information sheet for interested entrepreneurs.  It is available from the Yukon Liquor Corporation, as well as online at http://www.ylc.yk.ca/
