6 | Sexual and Gender-based Violence in Internally Displaced Camps Wednesday, February 06, 2008 10:00am Location: Avalon Sexual Assault Centre Avalon Sexual Assault Centre Hosts a Presentation and Discussion on Sexual and Gender-based Violence in Internally Displaced Camps. Presented by: Lahoma Thomas LAHOMA THOMAS believes that the current socio-political structures neglect the rights of women, domestically and internationally. Lahoma is a social worker and currently she is a M.A. candidate at Dalhousie University in the department of International Development Studies. Lahoma worked at Avalon Centre as a summer student Support Counsellor and Intake Worker in 2007. Over the course of the last seven years, she has worked on a number of projects that sought to address and promote awareness to issues such as poverty, sexual abuse and exploitation, gender inequality and HIV/AIDS. More recently, she returned from a 3-month research project in Northern Uganda, examining issues of sexual and gender-based violence in Internally Displaced Camps.
During this presentation, Lahoma will present her research findings and lead a discussion regarding how local women’s and social justice agencies can address sexual and gender-based violence both locally and globally.

7-9 | The Second Annual Atlantic Waves Conference March 7 - 9, 2008 Location: St. Mary's University The St. Mary’s Women’s Centre is hosting the second annual Atlantic Waves conference. The Atlantic Waves Conference is aimed at bringing women across the Atlantic Provinces together as a tool for creating and strengthening networks throughout the region. This years’ conference will be occurring on March 7th, 8th & 9th of 2008, right in time for International Women’s Day. Through presentations and workshops on social policy, current academic theories, grassroots organizations, alternative action approaches, and personal health and safety, we will explore ways in which the improvement of women’s lives throughout the Atlantic Region is possible. Atlantic Waves is dedicated to increasing the awareness of feminist issues, as well as the sharing of personal stories, building of relationships, and enforcing the networks between the diverse women of our region. Through the gathering together and sharing of personal knowledge and xperience, the aim is to inspire one another to act for change that affects us all. With a night of female musicians and performers, and the daily boutique featuring local female artists and entrepreneurs, women of all talents will have an opportunity to share their knowledge and skills.
