The use of bioenergy has increased rapidly over the past few years as governments seek secure, clean, renewable sources of energy and, in some cases, seek to enhance development in rural or remote farming and forestry communities. At a global level, these laudable aims have led to some unintended but challenging consequences for sustainability. What is the current status of bioenergy? What are these unintended consequences? What can we learn from the experience of others? Specifically, what issues might we face in the near future, and how might we contribute to help ensure a globally sustainable bioenergy sector? The current context will be explored by posing questions to which there are not always clear or easy answers.
