The Fish and Wildlife Division is responsible for all matters relating to or in any way connected with fish and wildlife, and matters relating to exotic animals; the rights, property, title, interests and claims of the Crown to and in fish and wildlife; the conservation and management of fish and wildlife; the issuance of licenses and permits under the Wildlife Conservation Act, and the collection of fees; and, programs of land use with respect to the preservation, maintenance and restoration of fish and wildlife habitat.

Wildlife Habitat and Population Assessment



WHAT WE DO


The section is responsible for the collection and interpretation of data to determine the status of wildlife habitat and wildlife populations.

Populations
  • Responsible for conducting aerial and ground censuses of a variety of birds and mammals including ducks, geese, woodcock, cormorant, and beaver.
  • Co-ordinates the migratory bird banding program for waterfowl and raptors (eagles, hawk, owls).
  • Conducts harvest surveys of game and furbearing animals and recommend appropriate regulations to maintain healthy populations based on surveys, banding and harvest data.
  • Responsible for monitoring wildlife complaints and providing written information and advice to the public on nuisance wildlife.
  • Provide advice on keeping wildlife in captivity and the export and importation of wildlife to PEI.

Habitat
  • Responsible for conducting and maintaining the Provincial wetland inventory and creating, maintaining and updating the wetlands and watershed digital layers in the Departmental Georgraphic Information system.
  • Co-ordinate and disseminate GIS data within the department and liaise between other departments, both Provincial and Federal, to share various other layers comprising the provincial GIS.
