Where can I get a driver's license?

Initial license for new drivers is probationary (2 years).

Drug or alcohol offenses may cause postponement of new driver's license eligibility.

Driver license classes include:

  • Class 1 - Any tractor-trailer or truck-trailer combination
  • Class 2 - Buses over 24 passengers
  • Class 3 - Straight truck over 4,600 kg, over 14,000 kg if trailer is less than 4,500 kg
  • Class 4 - Buses under 24 passengers, taxis and ambulances
  • Class 5 - Passenger cars and light trucks, not exceeding 14,000 kg
  • Class 6 - Motorcycles
  • Class 7 - Learner's permit
  • Class 8 - Mopeds
  • Class 9 - Farm tractor permit

Licenses are valid for three years and expire on licencee's birthday. Fee, $50 for three years. Duplicate, $10.

A written or oral exam, road sign, driving, vision test and Novice Driving or Driver Education Course is required for your original licence. An eye test is required if your license is expired more than one year. A written, vision and driving test is required if your license is expired over one year from another jurisdiction, or over 3 years if PEI license. Regular driver's license renewal must be made in person.

The minimum age to drive in PEI is 16 and the wait period is 275 days with Drivers Ed and 365 without. Drivers providing instructions to a beginner driver with an Instruction Permit must have held a valid drivers license for at least 4 years.

The fee to write the exam for an instruction permit is $20.00.
The instruction permit is $5.00.
The fee to take the road test is $20.00.

Graduated Driver License

The Graduated Driver Licensing Program (GDL) is a system of licensing that gives new drivers the opportunity to gradually move into higher risk driving situations after gaining experien in lower risk situations.
