A Classic Seaside Resort Takes on a New Life

Stanhope Beach Resort has re-opened after extensive renovations. This 70-unit inn is situated on the shore of Stanhope Bay and overlooking the beaches of Prince Edward Island National Park. The heritage character has been enhanced with freshly fitted-out rooms and public spaces, but the fireplaces and rich wood floors provide all the atmosphere of bygone days. A lounge, restaurant and meeting space are also on site along with tennis courts and a shoreside path to a nearby golf course. Visit www.stanhopebeachresort.com

Heavenly Indeed

Four and a half celestial stars for this converted church property on Prince Edward Island’s south shore. With an open cathedral (literally) ceiling, master bath in the bell tower and a superb view of Northumberland Strait this brand-new vacation rental house could provide just the spiritual experience that the doctor or the preacher ordered. Other Island accommodations can be found in a former convent, a lighthouse or a converted barn. Visit Harrington House at Rice Point

The Anniversary of Anne of Green Gables

Almost one hundred years ago, Prince Edward Island author, L.M. Montgomery published a novel that would go on to charm readers around the world. A century later, Anne of Green Gables continues to appeal to fans who visit the province to see the scenes Montgomery so lovingly described as well as attend Anne of Green Gables - The Musical ™ and visit the sites related to the story. In 2008, Prince Edward Island will be hosting a season-long party to celebrate the 100th anniversary. A major children’s literature festival is planned for early July, 2008. Be on hand to enjoy the festivities. Penguin has announced several significant publishing events in association with the 100th anniversary, including a new “pre-quel”to be written by Maritime children’s author Budge Wilson, a rich coffee-style book of exposing Montgomery’s extensive scrapbooks as well as a special anniversary edition of Anne of Green Gables, all in time for 2008 celebrations. Dayboat makes it to the top three

Air Canada’s inflight magazine, Enroute, has placed Dayboat on Canada’s top new restaurants list for 2006. Coming in at number three, Dayboat attracted the attention of the EnRoute reviewers who proclaimed that Dayboat “serves some of Canada’s most exciting food.” The restaurant is situated in Oyster Bed Bridge and diners are often rewarded with not only an excellent meal but a peaceful view of the river which is often punctuated with excitement when a local osprey dives for fish. Geocaching - A New Tourist Activity

Tourism operators in the South Shore region of Prince Edward Island have come up with a new activity to entertain their guests. Visitors will be loaned a Global Positioning System (GPS) device and given a bit of instruction on geocaching, then off they go to locate a “cache,” which could be a hidden container or a landmark. A GPS unit is a handheld device that shows your exact latitude and longitude coordinates and the direction of travel. Great fun for families, the quest could locate a cache that holds local products or mementos, maps or directions to another cache, just about anything. Some of the geocaching challenges available in PEI’s South Shore include Blackberry Bridge, Really Big Bridge!, and Osprey Number One. Visit geocachingpei.com/geocaching/

The Ultimate Romantic Destination

Everyone knows that islands have their own special appeal for couples who want to escape for a quiet romantic getaway. Islands are also among the hottest destinations for couples who want to include all their friends and families on a trip of a lifetime to celebrate an event of a lifetime! The members of the Prince Edward Island Wedding Association have been hosting more destination weddings each year and they would love to share with media the details of some of the very special events which have been held on the Island. Visit www.peiwedding.com/

Paddle from inn to inn

PEI’s Outside Expeditions offers a wide range of outdoor adventure experiences but the chance to travel from one fine inn to the next in a sea kayak has great appeal. Fresh air, salt water, fine dining... need we say more? To find out tour dates and to sign up contact Robert Ferguson at Tourism PEI.

Harness Racing Camp!

This is an original holiday opportunity that we doubt your neighbours or other journalists have heard of, much less tried. A six-day camp trains participants in all aspects of caring for an equine athlete, from the most basic tasks, nutrition, basic anatomy, health, recognizing and treating lameness and shoeing. Campers will also learn how to drive a horse, and on the sixth day will have the opportunity to actually participate in a race. These magical camps will take place at one of PEI's scenic matinee tracks and can be booked as Adult, Youth or Family. Visit www.peimatineetracks.com/camp.html

Or if you don’t have a full week, why not become a “Driver for a day?” Briarcliffe Inn has a fun package that allows visitors a “hands-on horse” experience. Contact Robert Ferguson to book a media harness racing press visit.
