Do you have a serious interest in law and security? Are you outgoing, self-disciplined, physically fit and committed to going to school? Are you eager to expand your communication and interpersonal skills? If so, you already have many of the basic qualities needed to succeed in the Law and Security program.
As a student, your focus will be on acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to protect yourself and others and to conduct investigations. You will learn to communicate effectively, to handle difficult people and crisis situations, to think critically, to manage your time successfully and to value healthy living and wellness. To secure employment in this field, you must have a clear criminal record.

Why choose NSCC?

NSCC’s Law and Security program meets and exceeds federal and provincial standards for security officers. It is recognized by the Canadian Society for Industrial Security and meets the standards set by the Canadian Standards Board for uniformed security.
Few security programs offer the comprehensive education available at NSCC. Students of this program acquire the theory as well as the knowledge and the skills demanded on the job. They attend guest lectures and workshops in firearms safety, suicide intervention, critical and stress management, non-violent crisis management and Canadian Safety Council defensive driving. Students who successfully complete the Law and Security program may qualify for advanced entry into NSCC's Correctional Services program.

Employment opportunities

Graduates are qualified to work as protection officers in government and private sector security and private policing organizations, and they qualify for positions where certification is required.

What are our graduates doing?

About half of our graduates are employed as security officers. Others have advanced into NSCC’s Correctional Services program or into policing and law enforcement education beyond the college, becoming fisheries and conservation officers and trainees with municipal or provincial police forces or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

What are the admission requirements?

You will need to have a High School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and the achievement of the age of nineteen years prior to going on work experience.

What else do you need to know?

The successful applicant will be required to supply a current medical certificate stating that she/he is capable of strenuous physical activity. Transportation to field placement is the responsibility of the student. Extra fees may apply to any voluntary programming or certification. Students enrolled in this program are required to wear a uniform while attending campus and during the Work Experience.
