Regulation: Not applicable

To Whom Does This Apply?

Anyone conducting business with a country against whom sanctions have been imposed through the Special Economic Measures Act.

Summary

The Special Economic Measures Act was adopted for the purpose of implementing a decision, resolution or recommendation of an international organization of states or association of states, of which Canada is a member, that calls on its members to take economic measures against a foreign state. Economic measures can also be called when the Governor in Council is of the opinion that a grave breach of international peace and security has occurred that has resulted, or is likely to result, in a serious international crisis. Examples of economic measures include the control of exporting to, importing from as well as landing and docking in a particular country.

At present, no country is subject to regulations made pursuant to the Special Ecomonic Measures Act . The last such regulations, with respect to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Serbia, were repealed effective August 1, 2001.
