Fertilizer Program

The Fertilizer Program's objective, under the Fertilizers Act, is to inspect:

• fertilizers, including but not limited to, agricultural and specialty products, micro-nutrient fertilizers and fertilizers-pesticide combinations; and
• supplements, including but not limited to, lining materials, naturally occurring and genetically modified microbial supplements, plant growth promoting substances, wetting agents, water-holding polymers, peat moss, compost, sewage sludge.

Eligibility Criteria

Both the domestic sale and import of fertilizers and supplements are governed under the terms of this Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) program.

Summary

The major activities undertaken by CFIA staff under this program include:

• registration of fertilizers, fertilizers/pesticides, and supplements;
• review of product safety, efficacy, and labelling;
• monitoring for active ingredients and contaminants in the market place;
• administering the Canadian Fertilizer Quality Assurance Program;
• inspection and enforcement.
