Arts Groups Receive Funding To Develop And Present The Arts

WHITEHORSE - Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor announced that eighteen arts organizations will share $424,500 to develop and present the arts in the Yukon.

"The Yukon government values the contribution that arts organizations make in enriching our communities," Taylor said. "Festivals, theatre, visual arts, dance and music organizations provide an exciting array of events and activities that develop artists, engage audiences and involve volunteers throughout Yukon communities."

Last year this program provided base funding for organizations to earn revenue and fundraise in excess of $2 million that supported over 400 arts events and attracted 50,566 people.

These activities were supported by 1,340 volunteers who worked 40,000 hours over the year. Together these arts organizations employed 450 people in jobs and contracts for artistic, administrative and producer positions.

Yukon Arts Funding Program recipients spent a total of $629,000 on artistic fees and over $665,000 to produce arts events.

While the bulk of public funding is received from Yukon government sources and totals $602,000, arts groups were able to leverage $306,000 in national funding and $42,000 in municipal support to assist in their activities.

Funding for the Yukon Arts Funding Program is derived from a combination of Yukon government and Lotteries Yukon funding. Applications are assessed through an arms-length process by the Yukon Arts Advisory Council.

The Yukon Arts Funding Program supports arts organizations with annual and ongoing operations.
