Work Begins At The Marsh Lake Community Centre
MARSH LAKE, Yukon, October 13, 2005 - Yukon Premier Dennis Fentie, the Honourable Larry Bagnell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources, on behalf of Minister of State-(Infrastructure and Communities), the Honourable John Godfrey, Southern Lakes MLA Patrick Rouble, together with Judy Corley of the Marsh Lake Community Society unveiled a sign today to officially mark the beginning of the construction for the new Marsh Lake Community Centre.
Funding for the construction of the approximately $1.8 million centre is provided under the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF), which was announced in January 2005. The Governments of Canada and the Yukon are each providing close to $900,000 towards this project.
"I am very pleased to see this community project coming to fruition," said Yukon Premier Dennis Fentie. "The growth of the community of Marsh Lake, and the many recreational activities and public meetings held here have underlined the need for this community centre to help serve the residents and the many positive activities they undertake."
"Through our New Deal for Cities and Communities, the Government of Canada is working in partnership with territorial and provincial governments to promote the development of sustainable communities," said Parliamentary Secretary Larry Bagnell. "This is a positive investment in healthy living and community growth and development, which will further contribute to the quality of life of residents of the Yukon and the North."
"The Marsh Lake Community Centre will be a multi-use building designed to meet the local community and the region's requirements for sports and recreation, active living, and community meetings, gatherings and events," said Southern Lakes MLA Patrick Rouble.
Construction of the 7,000 sq. foot single level building has been awarded to TSL Contractors of Whitehorse who will begin construction immediately. Yukon Government's Property Management Agency will manage construction of the facility, which will contain a large multi-purpose event room, change rooms, a recreation director's office, a meeting room and a social meeting area.
"The new community centre has been a much anticipated addition to our community," said Judy Corley from the Marsh Lake Community Society. "We will now have some room for community meetings and special events as well as the numerous sporting and active-living activities held throughout the year. We’re all looking forward to the grand opening sometime next July."
The Department of Indian and Northern Affairs provided support throughout the technical review and will continue to assist in the administration of the MRIF program on behalf of the Government of Canada.
