2007 Canada Winter Games Athletes Village Contracts Awarded

WHITEHORSE - Three more contracts for materials supply and related work on the 2007 Canada Winter Games Athletes Village have recently been awarded.

Klondike Welding of Whitehorse was awarded a $426,000 contract for supply and installation of structural framing steel in the central core areas of both buildings that will be the Athletes Village residences. Klondike Welding will commence installation of the steel components within the next few weeks.

Structurlam of Penticton B.C. was awarded a contract for supply of wooden beams with their winning bid of $277,698.24. The special beams are made of wood fibre glued and formed under pressure into high strength structural building components. Glulam beams, as they are called, compare favourably to the cost of other construction materials because they are easy to work with using conventional tools. They also feature superior fire resistance and have a unique resilience and flexibility making them ideal for regions subject to earthquakes.

The three elevators for the Athletes Village will be supplied by Thyssenkrupp Elevator Canada Ltd., with a bid of $469,000. One elevator will be centrally installed in the northern building earmarked for student residences and two other elevators will be installed in the south building. All three elevators are designed for mobility-friendly operation and will easily accommodate wheelchairs.

The Canada Winter Games will be held in Whitehorse, Yukon from Feb. 24 to March 10, 2007. It is estimated that 3,500 athletes, coaches and officials will be participating in the Games, with over 4,500 volunteers supporting the 22 sporting events that will take place over the two-week period. These Games will be the first Canada Games ever to be held North of the 60th parallel and will mark the 40th anniversary of the Canada Games, which were first held in 1967 and have alternated every two years between summer and winter.
