Yukon Sport For Life Funding Announced
WHITEHORSE - Community Services Minister Glenn Hart is pleased to announce that the first phase of the recently announced Yukon Sport for Life funding has been awarded.
"Yukon Sport for Life is based on the premise that physical activity is a life-long endeavor that contributes to overall quality of life," Hart said. "From childhood to senior years, regular exercise contributes positively to one’s physical ability and well-being. Good health allows us to enjoy all that life has to offer."
Nineteen Yukon sport governing bodies will receive $223,500 based upon applications submitted by the June 29, 2007 deadline for the first phase of funding.
In addition, $3,000 was allocated to deliver a coach training program relating to bullying, harassment and abuse in sport and $50,000 is additional funding for Yukon's qualified Elite Athletes who represent Yukon and Canada in international competitions.
The remaining 2007-08 Yukon Sport for Life budget of $177,500 will be distributed to Yukon sport governing bodies, based upon their applications that are due by September 14.
Yukon Sport for Life will enhance athlete and coaching development in Yukon from grassroots to elite levels, with an emphasis on rural, aboriginal and female participation in physical activity and competitive sports.
The overarching goal is to promote a better quality of life for all Yukoners through increased participation in sport and physical activity. One of the key objectives will be to encourage increased physical activity for youth and promote healthy lifestyle choices.
