Yukon Sport For Life Funding Announced
WHITEHORSE – Community Services Minister Glenn Hart has announced that the second phase of the Yukon Sport for Life funding for 2007/08 has been awarded.
Twelve Yukon sport governing bodies will receive $124,000 based upon applications submitted by the September 14, 2007 deadline. In addition, $50,000 was allocated to a fund to offset in-territory travel costs incurred by athletes participating in Yukon Championships and on Yukon representative teams.
As Hart said when the funding was announced in June of this year, "Yukon Sport for Life is based on the premise that physical activity is a life-long endeavour from childhood to our senior years. Regular exercise contributes positively to one’s physical ability and well-being, and good health contributes to a better quality of life."
Yukon Sport for Life will enhance athlete and coaching development in Yukon from grassroots to elite levels, with an emphasis on including more rural, aboriginal and female participation in physical activity and competitive sports.
The overarching goal is to promote a better quality of life for all Yukoners through increased participation in sport and physical activity. One of the key objectives will be to encourage increased physical activity for youth and promote healthy lifestyle choices.
The following Yukon sport governing bodies who submitted applications received funding for initiatives relating to:
a) Enhanced Athlete Development;
b) Rural and Aboriginal Participation; and
c) Coaching Enhancements and Coach Salary Subsidy.
