Report Shows Achievements in French Language Services

WHITEHORSE – Minister responsible for the French Language Services Directorate, Glenn Hart, is pleased to release the government’s annual report on French language services for 2006-2007.

"This report shows we have made excellent progress in our services and maintained a collaborative relationship with Yukon's dynamic Francophone community," Hart said. "I am proud to be the first minister responsible for the French Language Services Directorate."

The report highlights several key achievements:

    • Creation of the French Language Services Directorate in April 2006, providing French language services more profile within government and for the first time naming a minister responsible.
    • Significant increase in the French content on government web sites.  Four sites, including those of the Yukon Liquor Corporation, Justice, Yukon courts and the Legislative Assembly, are now bilingual.  Work is progressing on other sites, including the government’s homepage.
    • Major public health and safety campaigns on road safety, smoking cessation, safe communities, immunizations, and violence against women, have been promoted in French to Yukon’s Francophone community.

"I am pleased that Yukon won praise for hosting the 'most bilingual ever' Canada Winter Games in 2007," Hart said. "The credit goes first and foremost to the dedicated Games organizers, staff and volunteers. I also thank Yukon’s French-speaking community and the translator/revisers at the French Language Services Directorate."
