Regulation And Fees Streamlined For Yukon Public Quarry Pits

WHITEHORSE - The Yukon's 37 designated public quarry pits are now operating under the same permit and fee structures.

"These regulation amendments will ensure consistency with the Yukon government's long established quarry program," Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Archie Lang said. "The public and small contractors will be subject to one fee and one permitting schedule at all quarries throughout the territory."

Former Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) quarries, transferred to the Yukon government through devolution, charged rates differently from Yukon controlled pits and also charged a $200 land use permit fee.

Land use permits are no longer required at designated public quarry pits. The public can obtain a free personal use permit to extract up to 35 cubic meters of gravel or ten cubic meters of topsoil at no charge.

In addition, residents can obtain a permit to extract up to 200 cubic meters of gravel with a fee of 25 cents per cubic meter for all material above 35 cubic meters. Small contractors are also eligible for permits for up to 200 cubic meters but will pay a fee of 25 cents per cubic meter for the material.

"The Yukon government received many new responsibilities and programs as a result of devolution. Efforts will continue to improve and streamline programs and services in order to serve Yukoners better," Lang said. "Consultation with commercial quarry operators will take place later this summer to address similar concerns."

Quarry pits are located throughout the territory. Residents and contractors are encouraged to contact Client Services and Inspections offices for permits and additional information on the location of the closest public pits.
