Nominations Sought For Outstanding Mining Reclamation

WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government is seeking nominations for this year's Robert E. Leckie awards for outstanding hard rock and placer mining reclamation practices.

"Bob Leckie was a Mayo mining inspector and an innovator who promoted mining reclamation, research, and co-operation that benefited both government and industry," Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Archie Lang said. "These awards acknowledge exceptional efforts by exploration companies and placer operators who go above and beyond the normal call of duty in responsible mining and reclamation."

This includes reclaiming land for which there is no obligation to rehabilitate; adding features to the land that notably enhances the area and local community; or returning mined land to a condition that is not only structurally sound but also aesthetically pleasing.

Last year's award recipients were John Alton and Martin Knutson of Henry Gulch Placers for outstanding reclamation work on Last Chance Creek; NovaGold Resources for hard rock mining reclamation work at the McQuesten property in the Mayo mining district; and Newmont Exploration of Canada received an honourable mention for hard rock mining reclamation practices at their Aurex property near Mayo.

If you know of a miner or an exploration company that has done noteworthy work with their reclamation and site restoration efforts, please contact the Mining Lands Office of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, #400-211 Main Street (Shoppers Plaza), Box 2703, Whitehorse, YT, Y1A 2C6, e-mail leckieaward@gov.yk.ca, phone (867) 667-3153 or visit www.YukonMining.com.

Nominations are to be submitted in writing and need to include the reasons why the operator/company should be considered for the award; the location of the claim block; name and address of the operator; and at least one colour photograph of the reclamation activity.

The nominations are evaluated by a committee which includes the Yukon government, Klondike Placer Miners' Association and the Yukon Chamber of Mines. The deadline for nominations is Oct. 15. Awards will be presented at the Yukon Geoscience Forum, Nov. 21.
