Mining Awards Announced For Outstanding Reclamation
WHITEHORSE - The annual Robert E. Leckie award winners for outstanding quartz (hard rock) and placer reclamation practices were announced at the Yukon Geoscience Forum banquet here in Whitehorse.
"These awards acknowledge the great efforts by exploration and mining companies, operators and others who go above and beyond the normal call of duty in responsible mining and reclamation," Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Archie Lang said.
This includes adding features to the land that notably enhances the area and local community; returning mined land to a condition that is not only structurally sound but also aesthetically pleasing; and/or legacy cleanup on properties mined prior to mining land use regulations coming into effect.
Minister Lang, Yukon Chamber of Mines president Scott Casselman and Klondike Placer Miners' Association president Mike McDougall presented this year's awards to:
- Gimlex Enterprises Ltd. for outstanding reclamation on the placer operation at Dominion Creek near Dawson City; and
- Eagle Plains Resources for exceptional quartz reclamation at the Rusty Springs property in northern Yukon.
There were also two honourable mention awards given out to:
- A-1 Cats for reclamation at their placer operation on Dominion Creek; and
- Strategic Metals Ltd. for reclamation work at the Logtung property near Rancheria.
A committee comprised of representatives from government, mining associations and the private sector evaluated the nominations and made recommendations to the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources.
This award was created in 1999 as a tribute to the late Bob Leckie, an innovative mining inspector from Mayo. It has acknowledged Bob's dedication to progressive mining land use practices for the past seven years.
