Rock With Us! Celebrate Yukon Mining & Geology Week, May 23-27

WHITEHORSE - Celebrate Yukon's annual Mining and Geology Week, May 23-27. 

"This event raises awareness of the important roles mining and geology play in our everyday lives," Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) Minister Archie Lang said. "It focuses attention on the many positive ways mining and geology influence our history, culture and economy."

The Yukon government, Yukon Chamber of Mines and Klondike Placer Miners' Association are organizing contests and family and school activities in Dawson City, Watson Lake and Whitehorse, with prizes sponsored by local businesses.

Minister Lang and Premier Fentie will be in Dawson City this weekend to attend the International Gold Show, which kicks off Mining and Geology Week

Contests with prizes sponsored by local businesses:

• The Mining Awareness Model / Poster Contest on modern mining or current uses of rocks and minerals. Prizes include an internet satellite system, ipod's, digital camera's, metal detectors, GPS units. Entries can be viewed and judged by the public at the Elijah Smith Building on Main Street, Whitehorse.
• Radio Trivia Contests, on CBC, CHON FM and CKRW The Rush, where callers must answer a skill testing question to enter to win a helicopter ride over an exploration camp.
• Colouring Contest for children aged 8 and under with a $50 cash prize.
