Government Announces "Mining 101" Awareness Seminars

WHITEHORSE - Energy, Mines & Resources Minister, Archie Lang announced that the Government of Yukon will provide approximately $20,000 to increase public education and awareness of the mining industry by offering a "Mining 101" course to the general public.

"With a mine opening this year, coupled with the likelihood of more mines opening in the near future, the Yukon government is pleased to offer this seminar in order to provide Yukoners with the best information possible on the modern mining industry," Lang said.  "Increasing public awareness and outreach about the mining industry was a key recommendation of the Yukon Mineral Advisory Board (YMAB) in their 2005 annual report."

The seminar is designed to generate an understanding of standard Canadian and Yukon industry practices in mining and exploration, Yukon geology, current exploration activities and highlights of the global mining sector.  This very popular seminar provides an introduction to the mineral exploration and development industry, and is a similar model to the one offered during the annual Mineral Round Up in Vancouver.

The course will also help participants target future training opportunities that will be provided by the Yukon Mine Training Association.

"By encouraging a better understanding of the industry, we will be able to present a complete picture of the employment and training opportunities that exist within our mining sector," Lang concluded.

The first of these two-day seminars will take place June 11-12 in Whitehorse and will provide a variety of information intended for a broad audience. A second session will occur in the fall. Further information about how to register for the June seminar will be advertised in the local media soon.
