Yukon Government Participates in Oil & Gas Symposium

WHITEHORSE – Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Archie Lang has announced that Yukon is again partnering with other northern governments to host the second Northern Oil & Gas Best Management Practices Symposium in Inuvik, Northwest Territories Oct. 22-26.

The symposium showcases new and innovative methods, practices and policies used by industry, communities and regulators pertaining to the environment and land use within the energy sector.

"There are many opportunities for Yukon in oil and gas development in the North," Lang said. "We must approach these opportunities in a manner that is both economically and environmentally sustainable."

The keynote speaker is John Streicker, a climate change consultant, whose presentation focuses on climate change and repercussions for oil and gas development in the North.  He has previously presented to the Canadian Parliamentary Committee of the Environment, the United Nations Environmental Program in Norway, and the United Nations Youth Conference on Climate Change.

The Yukon government is developing and sharing best practices for conducting seismic programs, protecting heritage resources, and conflict avoidance with wilderness tourism.  Additional presentations include the classification of wetlands, future oil and gas planning in north Yukon, and an update on our regulatory process.
