Southern Lakes Loop Now In Prime Driving Condition

WHITEHORSE  - Highways and Public Works Minister Glenn Hart is pleased to announce completion of reconstruction work on the Tagish Road portion of the Southern Lakes loop.

"The completion of this project will provide locals and visitors to the Yukon, with safe and comfortable access to the outstanding scenery and waterways of the Southern Lakes area.  I encourage everyone to get out and enjoy these road improvements by taking a drive out to Carcross and Tagish," Hart said.

The five-year $5.2 million project involved reconstruction and resurfacing of a 20-kilometre section of road between Jakes Corner and Tagish and created more than 100 jobs. Finishing touches were put on the newly laid surface last week.

Whitehorse landscaper, Adorna Flowers and Landscaping Ltd., will be seeding alongside the Tagish Road from km 6.5 to km 20.7.  The seeding, using a native grass seed mix, is the final step in revegetating the area to prevent soil erosion.  A crew of two to four workers is expected to complete the work by the latter part of July.

The Southern Lakes loop enables travelers to visit the Marsh Lake, Tagish and Carcross communities in a one-day trip and have plenty of time to continue on to Whitehorse. The loop is comprised of the Alaska Highway (Hwy 1) section between the Carcross Corner and Jakes Corner, the Tagish Road (Hwy 8) and the Carcross Road section of the South Klondike Highway (Hwy 2) between Carcross and the Carcross Corner.
