Government Contracts For Highways, Infrastructure & Airports

WHITEHORSE - The departments of Highways and Public Works, and Community Services have awarded contracts valued at over $3.3 million for various highway and infrastructure projects.

32763 Yukon Inc. was awarded a contract for $212,000 to perform spot repairs on the Top of the World Highway.  This work started July 25 and is expected to be completed by the end of August.  Ten to 12 people are expected to be employed on this project.

Contracts for the production and supply of highway maintenance and repair materials have also been awarded.  Skookum Asphalt Inc. of Whitehorse will supply 'cold mix' for highway surface repair at various locations on the Alaska Highway.  This $335,000 contract will employ about six people.

Summit Aggregates Inc., also of Whitehorse, was awarded two contracts to produce and stockpile aggregate on the Dempster and Alaska highways.  Work on the Dempster commenced June 22 and was completed July 12.  This $725,000 contract employed approximately 16 people to produce aggregate stockpiles for highway maintenance and repair this summer.  The second contract is to produce aggregate at various locations along the Alaska Highway for future repair and maintenance.  Work on this $514,000 contract commenced July 28 and is expected to employ six people to the end of August.

Keith's Plumbing and Heating will upgrade the heating, ventilation and air conditioning at Jack Hulland School in Porter Creek.  This project will result in better quality of fresh air and will also increase the energy efficiency of the building.   The $398,000 contract will be completed by the end of October but interior work will be completed by the time students return to school in September.  Four skilled trades people are expected to be employed on the project.

Community Services awarded a contract to Sidhu Trucking Ltd. of Whitehorse, valued at $978,000 for construction of a new sewage treatment and disposal facility at Burwash Landing.  Work started mid-July and includes construction of a sewage lagoon, supplying and installing hydraulic structures and piping, building an access road, as well as installing safety fencing and signage.  The new facility replaces one that was built in 1968 and used by both Burwash and Destruction Bay.  Ten to 15 people are expected to work until about mid-September.

Resurfacing the Beaver Creek airport runway was recently completed.  Sidhu Trucking Ltd was awarded this $178,000 project that involved a test application of a new dust suppressant known as EK-35.  During the next three years, information will be gathered at Beaver Creek Airport to see how well EK-35 controls dust and prevents damage to aircraft propellers.  If results are positive, the suppressant may be used on other aprons and taxiways.  During construction, pilots were able to use the Beaver Creek runway thanks to cooperative efforts between the contractor and the Community Aerodrome Radio Station staff.
