Yukon Announces Next Steps For New Mobile Radio System

WHITEHORSE - The Government of Yukon is taking the next step with its Mobile Communications Solution by acquiring a new public safety mobile radio system to be used by the RCMP, health and safety professionals, public safety volunteer organizations and other government personnel.

The radio component of the Mobile Communications Solution (MoCS) project will replace the existing Multi-Departmental Mobile Radio System (MDMRS).

"This project requires government’s immediate attention as the MDMRS is at the end of its useful life, and must be replaced," Highways and Public Works Minister Glenn Hart said. "The introduction of an up-to-date radio system for the territory will support better response time from emergency professionals and will also contribute to the overall well-being and security of all Yukoners."

The Yukon government and Northwestel have begun discussions focusing on the use of Northwestel's existing telecommunications infrastructure and support services. Northwestel and the government have jointly initiated a competitive procurement process for supplying radio equipment needed to operate the new mobile radio system.

"We want a competitive environment for the supply of telecommunications-based services and applications, and for the delivery of affordable prices for Yukoners," Hart added.

"Northwestel is keenly interested in working with the Yukon government to replace this essential communications system," Northwestel president and CEO Paul Flaherty said. "We are also excited about the opportunity to provide enhanced telecommunications services that will benefit the Yukon."
