Nova Scotia Livestock

Based on farm cash receipts between 1999 and 2003, the livestock and products category of the NS agriculture industry averaged 64% of total farm cash receipts. The total crops sector, by contrast, averaged 33% while program transfer payments were 3% over the same period in Nova Scotia.

The livestock sector includes 6 primary segments that involve the marketing of cattle and calves, hogs, sheep and lambs, poultry, eggs and other livestock and products. The supply managed commodities; dairy, poultry and eggs; are the dominant sectors with aggregate annual sales in excess of $182,000,000. Total farm cash receipts for the province are in the range of $420,000,000 per annum. Nova Scotia has the highest sales of primary agricultural commodities of the four Atlantic Provinces. New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island take turns as the second and third in the region.
