Palaeontology Program

The Yukon Palaeontology Program manages the territory's fossil resources. The program inventories and curates Yukon fossils and conducts research on Yukon’s ancient life and environments.

Yukon Palaeontology Program  facilitates research by scientists from Yukon, the rest of Canada and abroad and is a repository for the fossils they collect.

The program is also involved in outreach and educational programs that include public lectures, classroom presentations, traveling fossil displays, scientific conferences and publications.

The fossil collection was established by the Government of Yukon in 1995 to address obligations under the Historic Resources Act (1991) and the Umbrella Final Agreement. The Palaeontology Program was also established to provide scientific expertise for the development and operation of the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre which opened its doors in 1997.

The Yukon Palaeontologist serves as the Expert Examiner for the exportation of all Yukon fossil remains (including fossil ivory) from Yukon under the Canadian federal Cultural Property Export and Import Act.
