Responsibilities
OFFICE OF DEPUTY MINISTER
The Deputy Minister, responsible to the Minister of Agriculture, oversees the
administration of the department.
AGRICULTURE SERVICES
The Executive Director, reporting to the Deputy Minister, is responsible for federal/
provincial policy and oversees the administration of four divisions:
Resource Stewardship/Field Services
Environmental management, land protection, 4-H and rural organizations, and field
services
Programs and Risk Management
Farm industry development, agricultural research, and federal/provincial
stakeholder interactions/agreements
Crop and Livestock Insurance Commission
Natural Products Marketing Council
LEGISLATION AND COMPLIANCE SERVICES
The Executive Director, reporting to the Deputy Minister, oversees the administration
of two divisions:
Food Protection and Enforcement
Food safety education and public health protection, food service and food retail
inspection, meat inspection, fisheries inspection and enforcement
Quality Evaluation
Consumer health and safety, meat and food/food shops inspection, animal health
program,veterinarian services and laboratory services (soil, water,tissue analysis,
dairy services analysis)
INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT AND BUSINESS SERVICES
Industry Development and Business Services has a service level agreement with the
Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture for the delivery of the Marketing Services,
Business Development and Economics Services, and Product and Quality
Development Services divisions. The Executive Director, reporting to the Deputy
Minister, oversees the administration of four divisions:

Marketing Services
Market development/promotions,market research and information,International
Business Development,Investment, Nova Scotia School Milk Program,and Taste of
Nova Scotia Program
Farm Loan Board
Loans and administers the New Entrants Program for agriculture
Business Development and Economics Services
Economic analyses and information, business/income management, entrepreneurial
development, opportunity analysis, and strategy development
Product and Quality Development Services
New and value-added products, quality and innovation initiatives, barriers to
commercialization, and community-based strategic alliances
POLICY AND PLANNING
The Executive Director, reporting to the Deputy Minister, oversees the administration
and operation of three corporate service areas:
Policy and Planning
Corporate business planning, accountability reporting, policy development and
coordination, ministerial briefing requirements, corporate project management and
event planning.
Legislative and Policy Services
Coordination of legislation and regulations, departmental submissions to Executive
Council, and agency, board, and commission appointments.
Corporate Administration
Administration of FOIPOP and Routine Access Policy,Occupational Health and
Safety,records management,facility management,reception services,website
development and management.
NOVA SCOTIA AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE
The President, reporting to the Deputy Minister, oversees the administration and
operation of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. Through its Atlantic Canada
mandate for agricultural education, the college has national and international
educational linkages in agriculture research and development.
