Defined Forest Area Management

The Defined Forest Area Management (DFAM) initiative is intended to provide a framework for collaborative forest planning and management by recipients on Crown land within Timber Supply Areas (TSAs). The legislation framework defining DFAM obligations is currently expected to come into force in April 2007. Until then, the Ministry of Forests and Range has provided a transition period in which specified activities will be carried out by TSA DFAM groups using targeted FIA funds until they become legal obligations. A DFAM group is comprised of timber sales managers, holders of replaceable forest licences, and other holders of agreements that meet the prescribed requirements. See the DFAM homepage for more information.

DFAM transition funds have been targeted to fund timber supply analysis to support Chief Forester allowable annual cut determinations for TSAs.

Please note that beginning in 2005/2006, forest health will no longer be a core DFAM element. The responsibility will return to the Ministry of Forests and Range.

Timber Supply Analysis

DFAM groups in TSAs can complete data packages and timber supply analysis reports ensuring that this information is made available to the public and First Nations. Once completed, the reports and comments will be provided to the Chief Forester in support of determining allowable annual cuts for TSAs.
