News ReleasesSeptember 26, 2002 YUKON AIR TRAVEL COMMITTEE ISSUES DIRECTION TO GOVERNMENT WHITEHORSE - The Air Travel Committee notified the Yukon government today of its decision that a portion of Air Canadas additional summer flight capacity harmed competition between airlines in the territory. The Committee's decision is based on its research on airline activities that took place in May, June and July of 2002. It found that more airplane seats were put onto the market than reasonably required. Read more... September 13, 2002 GOVERNMENT AWARDS $600,000 PLUS IN HIGHWAY CONTRACTS WHITEHORSE Approximately $600,000 in highway contracts have been awarded to Yukon companies, who will put more than twenty-five people to work on these projects in September. "We have awarded more than $34 million for highway construction and maintenance projects this year," Infrastructure Minister Scott Kent said. "The result is safer and improved highway infrastructure and employment for Yukoners." Read more... September 10, 2002 REVISION OF ALASKA HIGHWAY AT CHAMPAGNE OFFICIALLY OPENED WHITEHORSE The revised section of the Alaska Highway near Champagne was officially opened today. Infrastructure Minister Scott Kent and Community Services Minister Pam Buckway officially opened the revised section of the highway Tuesday afternoon. The highway construction work consists of a 16-kilometre relocation of the highway starting at the Mendenhall River and rejoining the old highway approximately five kilometres past the village of Champagne. August 26, 2002 GOVERNMENT FUNDS REST STOPS IN TESLIN, BRAEBURN AREA WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government is installing rest stops in the Teslin and Braeburn areas for the travelling public. August 15, 2002 GOVERNMENT HIGHWAY & TRANSPORTATION CONTRACTS AWARDED WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government has awarded more than $600,000 for highway contracts that will employ more than 40 people during the month of August. "The benefits of highway construction and maintenance far outweigh the unavoidable delays for the traveling public," Infrastructure Minister Scott Kent said. "It supports many Yukon-based companies and their employees, and the end result is, of course, jobs and better roads." Read more... August 15, 2002 ROUND TWO PROJECTS ANNOUNCED FOR RURAL ROADS UPGRADING WHITEHORSE Projects in Dawson City, Destruction Bay, Haines Junction, Tagish and Whitehorse have been approved for funding under the Rural Road Upgrading Program (RRUP). The projects total more than $200,000. "These projects are the result of requests and input from rural residents," Infrastructure Minister Scott Kent said. "This program continues to create jobs by putting local people to work on projects that benefit the infrastructure of their communities." Read more... August 2, 2002 ALCOHOL IGNITION INTERLOCK PROGRAM INTRODUCED IN THE YUKON WHITEHORSE A program that will prevent a vehicle from being started when the driver has been drinking is being introduced in the Yukon this September. The Alcohol Ignition Interlock program will allow people who have lost their drivers licences through impaired driving convictions to gain conditional driving privileges by using the device. At a ribbon cutting ceremony on July 25th, the Miles Canyon Historic Railway Society, Yukon government and dignitaries will celebrate the extension of the trolley into Rotary Peace Park. Read more... July 17, 2002 ROAD CONSTRUCTION AWARENESS MEASURES UNDERWAY WHITEHORSE The Yukon government is taking proactive measures to alert the traveling public and tourists about construction zones along the north Alaska Highway that will improve road conditions. million to local contractors for highway construction projects around the territory. July 4, 2002 TICKET FINES AND DEMERIT POINTS INCREASE TO ADDRESS ROAD SAFETY WHITEHORSE As part of a national effort to combat dangerous driving and encourage road safety, the Yukon government is raising ticket fines and demerit points for violations of motor vehicle laws. Particular attention is placed on high risk driving practices causing harm and loss to others. The new fines and demerit points take effect July 15, 2002. Read more... June 18, 2002 ROAD CONTRACTS AWARDED FROM TAGISH TO TOP OF THE WORLD WHITEHORSE Another 60 Yukoners will be hired this summer as a result of $1.6 million in highway projects recently awarded by the Yukon government to local contractors. Mountain Transfer Ltd. has received a $559,000 contract for highway construction on the Tagish Road. This will employ about 15 Yukoners from now until mid August. Aurora Construction has been awarded a $83,000 contract to repair the Yukon (Lewes) River Bridge concrete deck. The company will employ four people for two weeks in July. Read more... June 13, 2002 MORE YUKONERS PUT TO WORK THROUGH GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS WHITEHORSE More than 70 Yukoners will be employed as a result of some new Yukon government highway projects. Golden Hill Ventures Ltd. of Whitehorse has received an $8.4-million Shakwak Highway contract to do road construction in the Destruction Bay area. This will employ about 50 Yukoners from mid-June of this year to the end of June 2003. Read more... June 6, 2002 NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED INTO THE TRANSPORTATION HALL OF FAME WHITEHORSE The Alaska Highway will figure prominently in the Yukon Transportation Hall of Fame ceremony being held this evening in Whitehorse. The late George Chambers from Champagne and Alaskan Senators Ted Stevens and Mike Gravel will be inducted into the Hall of Fame for 2002. Read more... May 29, 2002 YUKONERS APPOINTED TO AIR TRAVEL COMMITTEE WHITEHORSE Six Yukoners have been appointed to sit as members and alternate members of the recently formed Air Travel Committee for a two-year term, Infrastructure Minister Scott Kent announced today. "The committee was formed to help improve air travel for everyone," said Kent. "It will review airline practices and watch for any anti-competitive practices, such as offering air fares so low that another carrier couldnt possibly compete over the long term." Read more... May 28, 2002 2002 RURAL ROADS UPGRADING PROJECTS ANNOUNCED WHITEHORSE Construction will soon begin on 15 Yukon projects that have been approved under round one of the 2002/03 Rural Road Upgrading program. These projects will receive a total of $655,000 out of this years available $800,000 Rural Roads funding. The remainder of the Rural Roads money budgeted for 2002/03 will be awarded in midsummer. Read more... May 24, 2002 DOZENS OF YUKONERS PUT TO WORK THROUGH GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS WHITEHORSE The Yukon government has awarded several more contracts for highway maintenance and rehabilitation. Skookum Asphalt Ltd. of Whitehorse has received a $292,800-contract for a pavement overlay on a section of the Klondike Highway north of the Hot Springs Road.
