Environmental Data and Statistics

Statistics Canada publishes data and statistical analyses which are useful for monitoring and studying the natural environment and the impact of economic and social activities upon it. Statistics Canada maintains information on capital and operating expenditures made by the business sector establishments, as well as governments that supply environmental goods and services.

Through surveys and analytical reports Statistics Canada provides information on users and suppliers of environmental products in Canada.

Environment Statistics

The Environmental Information System database contains environment information presented in maps, tables and charts for specialized geographies. The Geographic Information System (GIS) component contains a wide variety of social and economic data series as well as data on environmental quality.

Environmental Protection Expenditures

The Survey of Environmental Protection Expenditures measures the cost of environmental protection to business, governments and society. Statistics Canada also measures the use of pollution prevention and abatement technologies and processes by businesses.

  • expenditures on environmental protection.

Waste Management Industry

Two surveys, one that targets public administrations and the other that covers the private sector, gather waste management statistics. These surveys gather information on the financial characteristics and waste management activities undertaken by companies, local governments and other public waste management bodies. These services included the collection and transportation of wastes and of materials destined for recycling, the operation of non-hazardous and hazardous waste disposal facilities, the operation of transfer stations and the treatment and disposal of wastes deemed to be hazardous.

Information is available in the following areas:

  • revenues, expenditures, employment of waste management businesses;
  • expenditures, employment of local governments involved in waste management.

Environment Industry

Canada's environment industry offers a wide range of goods and services aimed at protecting the environment and improving environmental quality. The industry is involved with supplying integrated process technologies to reduce environmental risk and prevent pollution. Statistics Canada provides information on the size and growth of the environment industry in Canada.

Data include:

  • revenues of environmental goods and services (air pollution, water treatment, energy efficiency and renewable energy);
  • industrial players, including waste management, consulting engineers, recyclers and manufacturers;
  • provincial/territorial breakdown and client base;
  • sales of goods and services to reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
  • data by large firms and SMEs;
  • employment data.

Environmental Accounts and Indicators

The environmental accounts present detailed statistics describing:

  • the size of Canada's natural resource stocks and their contribution to national wealth;
  • the extraction of these same resources and their disposition among businesses, households, governments and the rest of the world;
  • the generation of various wastes (liquid, solid and gaseous) by industries, households and governments and the management of these wastes; and
  • the expenditures made by businesses, households and governments for the purposes of protecting the environment.

The accounts are fully compatible with the System of National Accounts.
