The Sustainability Reporting Toolkit is an online tool that will assist businesses in learning more about sustainability reporting, assessing the need to report and creating an effective report.

Eligibility Criteria

The Sustainability Reporting Toolkit is targeted primarily at companies that are not currently reporting this kind of information. It is also relevant to experienced sustainability reporters by highlighting a number of best practices.

Summary

The Sustainability Reporting Toolkit was developed in response to an industry identified need to have more information and guidance on practices related to corporate sustainability reporting.

Corporate sustainability reports

A corporate sustainability report is a vehicle to communicate with stakeholders on a company's economic, environmental and social management and performance. Sustainability reporting addresses how societal trends are affecting the company, and how the company's presence and operations are affecting society. As such, sustainability reporting can demonstrate a company's motivation and willingness to position itself in a broader context.

Sustainability reporting in Canada is voluntary, but a growing number of countries are establishing mandatory reporting requirements.

Objectives of the Toolkit

The objectives of the Sustainability Reporting Toolkit are to:

  • respond to the needs for improved sustainability reporting identified by Canadian business;
  • provide simple guidance on how and what to report;
  • increase the number of Canadian reporters who disclose sustainability information;
  • encourage compatibility with international reporting efforts.

About the Toolkit

The Toolkit contains:

  • general information to assist in setting the stage for a sustainability report;
  • guidance for preparing a report, such as key steps to follow, important considerations, and key elements to include;
  • suggestions for creating an effective report; and
  • other helpful materials.

The content is based on an assessment of industry needs undertaken by the Federal Government (Industry Canada, Environment Canada, Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade) and Stratos Inc.
