New Yukon Heritage Website Launched

WHITEHORSE - As part of an ongoing effort to preserve Yukon's valuable heritage, Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor announced the launch of the department's new website about heritage conservation in the territory.

Located at www.yukonhistoricplaces.ca, the site offers quick access to information about historic site designation, the financial incentives for heritage conservation and the national Historic Places Initiative.

"The Government of Yukon is dedicated to protecting and promoting the territory’s diverse and fascinating heritage, for the benefit of all Yukoners present and future," Taylor said. "The Yukon's Historic Places website brings together information from a range of sources, and gives Yukoners easier access to information about historic places and heritage conservation."

The site is also the gateway to the new Yukon Register of Historic Places, an online listing of historic places in the territory that have been formally designated on a municipal, territorial or national level. Users can explore Yukon’s history by searching the register for historic sites by the site type, name or location.

The development of yukonhistoricplaces.ca was funded through Yukon’s participation in the Historic Places Initiative (HPI). This pan-Canadian partnership is Canada's first national framework to conserve the country's important heritage. Its purpose is to create awareness of historic places and sites, set standards for sound conservation practice, and to encourage citizen involvement in conservation. The HPI website can be found at www.historicplaces.ca.
