Yukon Welcomes New Alberta Centennial Scholarship For Students

WHITEHORSE - The Government of Yukon today has announced over $50,000 in new scholarships available for Canadian students through the Alberta Centennial Scholarship Program.

The new Alberta-funded national scholarship program has been launched by the Government of Alberta as an Alberta centennial gift to Canadians.

"The Government of Yukon is pleased to announce the contribution that the Government of Alberta is making to post-secondary education and training for Canadian students across Canada," Premier Dennis Fentie said. "We believe the Alberta Centennial Scholarship Program will compliment existing student financial assistance available to Yukoners. I would personally like to thank Premier Klein for his province's generous gift to Yukon and other students across the country."

"This government is committed to increasing Yukoners' access to post-secondary education," Education Minister John Edzerza said. "We commend the Albertan government for their generous Alberta Centennial Scholarship Program, and we also encourage Yukon students to contact the Department of Education to find out about our student financial assistance programs."

The Alberta Centennial Scholarship Program will make 25 awards of $2,005 available annually to Yukon students who display outstanding citizenship, leadership, community service and initiative. Ten awards will be available to students who have attended secondary schools in rural communities, and 15 awards will be made available to students who have attended secondary schools in Whitehorse.

The scholarships are for students applying for the first time in their first-year of post-secondary or trades in-school training at an eligible Canadian institution.

The Alberta Centennial scholarship for Yukon students will be administered by the Yukon Foundation.  For details on how to apply and eligibility requirements, please call (867) 393-2454, e-mail info@yukonfoundation.com or visit www.yukonfoundation.com.
