Premier And Minister Of Education Announce Second Annual Council Of The Federation Literacy Award

WHITEHORSE - As a member of the Council of the Federation, the Government of Yukon is pleased to announce the second annual Council of the Federation Literacy Award. The Council of the Federation was created by Canadian premiers in 2003 to help the provinces and territories play a leadership role in revitalizing the Canadian federation and to build a more constructive and cooperative federal system.

"Literacy is integral to creating healthier communities and we want to recognize people who make a difference through the Council of the Federation Literacy Award," said Premier Dennis Fentie. "We encourage Yukoners to nominate a dedicated and hardworking learner for this award. We are looking for someone who is actively pursuing their literacy and numeracy goals."

"Literacy is an important component of lifelong learning," said Minister of Education, John Edzerza. "Even though the Yukon has one of the highest average literacy levels in all of Canada, we know that there is still room for improvement. There are many, many individuals who are facing the challenges of improving their literacy and numeracy skills each day and we want to honour those people with this award."

The recipient of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award in Yukon will be invited to attend a special awards ceremony in Whitehorse. Premier Dennis Fentie will be presenting the recipient with the Council of the Federation Literacy Award Medal.

Deadline for nominations for the award is June 16, 2006. To learn more about the Council of the Federation Literacy Award, or to request a nomination package, please call (867)667-5690 or 1-800-661-0408, extension 5690.
