The Klondike Celebrates Tourism Week With Opening At Dawson City Museum

WHITEHORSE - Tourism Week festivities get underway in Dawson City beginning with the official opening of the Dawson City Museum's Visible Storage exhibit on June 9 at 6 p.m.

The visible storage exhibit allows visitors access to areas not generally open to the public.

"The Department of Tourism and Culture recognizes the importance of Yukon's remarkable history and the affection residents and visitors feel for our past," Tourism Minister Elaine Taylor said. "We are pleased to support the museum to make their collection more accessible."

The visible storage exhibit is not just a display but is actual storage space, and the public is able to view shelves of artifacts that would rarely be displayed in the public gallery.

"I am extremely proud of this exhibit that showcases over 3,000 artifacts," Dawson City Museum Executive Director Julia Pike, said. "Increasing access to our collection allows us to display more pieces, adding value to visitors' experience at the museum."

Immediately following the exhibit opening, the community is invited to celebrate Tourism Week in Canada at a barbecue hosted by the Department of Tourism and Culture in collaboration with the Dawson City Museum, Klondike Visitors Association and the Tourism Industry Association of Yukon.

"It is especially fitting that this tourism celebration takes place at one of Yukon's museums," Taylor said. "Preserving and showcasing our natural and human history is important for residents and visitors alike. Visiting museums and heritage sites is one of the top activities enjoyed by our visitors."
